New features in the Material Prize

The number of categories has been expanded to reflect economic and social transformation. The competition now honors the topic of sustainability with two new categories: Ecology & Climate Protection and Circularity & Reuse. While the Outdoor & Façade category focuses on architecture and the outdoor area, the Best Sample category looks at the overall presentation and the best appearance.

And there are also innovations in terms of the jury. This year, for the first time, ten jurors will evaluate the submissions with their expertise in design, architecture, sustainability, research and communication. In the course of internationalization, the Material Prize 2024 will be bilingual for the first time, addressing the creative and construction industries. This means that submissions from the DACH market will be able to compete with the international competition for the first time. We expect an extremely exciting competition.

The changes will culminate in the awards ceremony. In cooperation with BAU 2025, the ceremony will be held on January 16th, 2025 for the first time at the world's leading trade fair for architecture, materials and systems and will be accompanied by a special exhiption. All award-winning materials and systems as well as all submissions for this year's competition will be presented on around 100 square meters and will also be judged by the professional audience. It is therefore definitely worth taking part in the renowned competition.

About the competition

Sponsor & Background

Material wins!

The renowned Material Prize is an award for new material developments and innovative building materials and their use in built projects. Every year, the most innovative material manufacturing companies as well as the best planners and creative minds are sought. The Material Prize thus focuses on the entire process chain - from development to application. The prize winners are united by their extraordinary material expertise.

Origin and development

The Material Prize was first launched in 2013 as a competition for new materials. Following the rapid success and pioneering prize winners on the manufacturer and developer side, the focus was expanded in 2015 to include planners and their built projects, who can now also apply for the coveted award.

Intention of the Material Prize

The Material Prize focuses on material quality and innovation and offers a special stage for this. With their submissions, the participants show who is driving the industry forward the most. The jury then asks itself which innovations and solutions promise the greatest impact. With the vote, the best of the best become the winners.

Dual construction and material culture

The Material Prize is one of the few awards for materials in the construction industry and their application. It honors the processes in the material cycle that are mutually dependent and equally essential for the existence and progress of the industry - production and creation. The dual focus allows the unique format to cover the entire spectrum of material innovation and to grant both target groups their own award.

The high quality and innovative strength has made the Material Prize a seal of approval from the very beginning. The submissions and - above all - the awards and recognitions are perceived extremely positively in the professional world. The awards in recent years include ground-breaking processes, innovative designs and proven classics in the construction industry, as well as outstanding buildings and visionary use of materials. Previous winners include world-famous corporations and start-up companies as well as renowned offices and creative newcomers who clearly stand out from the crowd.

Reach

The Material Prize is a competition that deliberately focuses on the DACH countries. However, as good material culture knows no borders, we have already received submissions from over 20 nations. The Material Prize thus underlines its boundless appeal.
